The Complete Guide to Navigating Labor
Understanding your body’s signals is the key to a calm childbirth. Master the science of labor and know exactly when it’s time to meet your baby.
Understanding the Journey
Labor is a profound biological process. As you approach delivery, hormones like oxytocin increase, signaling your uterus to contract. A contraction is the tightening and releasing of your uterine muscle.
These muscular flexes serve a crucial purpose: they help to thin out (efface) and open (dilate) your cervix, creating a pathway for your baby. By relying on precise data from our tracker, you can calmly monitor your body's progression without panic.

The Famous 5-1-1 Rule Explained
Minutes Apart
The interval from the exact start of one contraction to the start of the next is 5 minutes or less.
Minute Long
The contraction itself (the pain duration) lasts for at least 60 solid seconds.
Full Hour
This relentless pattern of 5 mins apart and 1 min long continues for at least one hour.
Real Labor vs. False Labor (Braxton Hicks)
check_circle True Labor
- • Intervals consistently shorten (e.g., 10m, 8m, 5m).
- • Pain grows progressively stronger and longer.
- • Doesn't stop if you walk, rest, or drink water.
- • Pain often starts in the back and wraps to the front.
cancel False Labor
- • Irregular, unpredictable intervals (e.g., 10m, 20m, 7m).
- • Intensity stays the same or weakens.
- • Often stops when you change positions or hydrate.
- • Felt mostly as a tightening in the front of the abdomen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the interval time actually measure?
The interval is the time measured from the exact start of one contraction to the exact start of the next one. It includes the duration of the pain itself plus your resting period in between.
Why is the tracker beeping / turning red?
Our AI analyzes your last 5 contractions. If your averages meet the 5-1-1 rule, it turns Orange (Active Labor). If you check "Water Broke" or "Bleeding", it turns Red (Emergency). This is to guide you on when to contact the hospital.
Can I close the browser and come back?
Yes. We use your browser's local storage. As long as you don't clear your browser data or press the "Reset" button, your contraction history will remain saved even if you lose internet or refresh the page.
